RHS Flower Show at Tatton Park
18 - 22 July 2001

We could have hoped for a little more sunshine but nevertheless the 3rd RHS Flower Show in Tatton Park has been a huge success with more people than ever enjoying the power of the flower. This was my first visit and I was impressed. Living locally I took advantage of the courtesy bus.

Many thousands of people were able to spread out and enjoy the great variety of (mostly) horticulturally inspired displays on offer. It is the fragrance that hits the senses, of course, and then the superb blooms and carefully selected colour schemes showing all the flowers on offer to perfection in the Floral Marquees. Depressingly so - how do they do it ?

And some amazing new colours caught my eye - the very dark shades are fascinating. So many people working so hard to create gardens in the park in just two weeks. Small ones, big ones, traditional pretty ones, fun ones, imaginative ones, very contemporary ones - they were all there.

I had a chat with two local designers which we have filmed so watch this space for more information. Dreaming of Italy from a Knutsford Garden dreamt up by Folia Garden Designs and created by Colour Scope Gardens of Mobberley - a delightful little gem reflecting the sometimes eccentric architecture of Richard Harding Watts. With live music strumming away in the gazebo Harry and Astrid Levy of Aughton Green Landscapes were enthusiastic about their 'Serene' watery garden which relaxes and inspires. Both medal winners and very well deserved.
 

So, its back to the weeding and dreaming of winning that £10,000 makeover competition. Watching the dismantling of all the sites on Sunday evening must have been heartbreaking for those involved but we all joined the scrum to pick up cheap flowers and vegetables and I came away armed with a mass of wonderful roses, fresh tomatoes, scrumptious carrots, and an enormous turnip.
