Knutsford Heritage Centre opened in 1989, built on the site of a 17thC.timber framed building of which the present building is a reconstruction. 

The site later became a smithy.  Excavated, rebuilt and opened by Macclesfield Groundwork Trust, the Centre was built utilising some of the original materials and is thus a valuable historical site in its own right, as well as a necessary asset to a historical town such as Knutsford.

The Heritage Centre provides a source of information on Knutsford's history and serves to keep its heritage alive.  It is also a focus of activity and interest, accessible to all and available to different organisations and aims.

The Centre shop offers souvenirs of a visit to the town as well as books, maps and free literature on history, outdoor activities, what to see and where to go whilst in Knutsford.  The Centre houses a permanent exhibition, with exhibits and a video on the story of Knutsford, detailing the towns famous names, areas, associations and periods.  The Gallery Exhibition Centre, a separate building to the rear of the Centre, presents a changing array of exhibitions and events.  This building is host to functions by different organisations.

The Centre is a valuable repository of information on Knutsford and aims to offer an educational programme for schools and literature on its history.  The Centre would also like to extend its archive by developing an oral history project and would welcome people who wish to be involved in its functioning and aims.

The Heritage Centre is run entirely by volunteers and their efforts enable the Centre to open for visitors throughout the week. The Centre has charitable status and would welcome any offers of assistance, be it hands on or financial, to develop its aims and successfully continue into its second decade. The centre relies on it's volunteers and would welcome anyone who could spare a little time to help out.
