Ask Joan
Joan Leach is a local historian, a volunteer at the Heritage Centre, a founder of The Gaskell Society, and much more besides.

My name is Karen Jackson Deyle. I am great grandaughter of Anne Sarah Pollit. My Grandfather was Sam Jackson, born one of 17 or 18 in Knutsford --- his birth certificate lists his parents occupations as "victualers" --- keepers of the inn -- the Lord Eldon.

I would love to know if there are any pictures available of my Great grandmother. My mother and I have been most curious. I wonder if you might have some in your archives?

Joan answers:

The first celebration at Knutsford, of May Day, took place on Monday, 2nd May 1864. Annie Pollitt, daughter of Mr, James Pollitt, landlord of The Lord Eldon was chosed as the first Knutsford May Queen. In the 1914 photographs below Annie Pollitt can be seen again in the May Day Procession - exactly 50 years after she had been crowned Queen.
