Ask Joan
Joan Leach is a local historian, a volunteer at the Heritage Centre, a founder of The Gaskell Society, and much more besides.

I have just started reading Gaskell and would like to find a couple good books on Wives and Daughters that help me appreciate what I'm reading, but I don't know how to find them. Do you have any recommendations? Thank you!

Debra Stein

Joan answers:

Dear Debra

Elizabeth Gaskells Wives & DaughtersHappy you, still having Gaskell to discover and enjoy.

Jenny Uglow's book: Elizabeth Gaskell : A Habit of stories ' ( Fabers) is the best introduction and covers assessment of Wives & Daughters etc. The Everyman P/B edition has a useful introduction and reviews the book from publication onwards.

You can discover Gaskell Society info on: www.gaskellsociety.users.btopenworld.com

Our web pages have Journal articles you can download http://lang.nagoya-u.jp/~matsuokaEG-Journal.html

Themes of Elizabeth Gaskell by Enid Duthie might be of interest, too.

Best Wishes
