Ask Joan
Joan Leach is a local historian, a volunteer at the Heritage Centre, a founder of The Gaskell Society, and much more besides.

Dear Joan, I am the daughter of a daughter of Knutsford. I currently live in Northern
California, USA. My mother was married to an American Air Force Airmen. I was curious if you might know her or any members of her family. Her name was Ruth Bason. Her father, George Bason and mother, Augusta (Gussie) Bason lived in Northwich Road. Mom had 7 brothers and sisters, of which Colin, still lives in Knutsford. I have visited Knutsford often over the years and I love it dearly, although my last visit was in 1997. I hope to get back soon.

I think that your status as Knutsford's Historian is wonderful. It is important to keep the old traditions and history alive. Please let me know if you are familiar with my family. I greatly appreciate your time. Sincerely, Lenora (Simon) Shealy.

Joan answers:

It is good to know that there are still Anglo-Americans who love Knutsford. I did not know the family well BUT I knew Ruth who was in my class at Egerton School . I remember them as a large, happy family. I remember the American soldiers who were billetted in Knutsford and how we children pleaded with them for chewing gum becasue we had so few sweets then.

Was Ruth's husband a GI?
